Sun Arcana, the quartet from Essex, have been busy making a name for themselves since forming in 2016. Their music is fun and inventive – imagine a mixture of Muse and Paramore. Earlier this year they released their debut EP and it is ear-catching, feisty and atmospheric. Put their EP on and you will fall in love with it. Harry, the bassist, chats this week about all things Sun Arcana and reveals his Top 5 Pick-Me-Up tracks…
How did you come together as a band?
Tom, Jules and I actually went to univeristy together but I actually met Tom through Facebook as I wanted to know if he needed a guitarist. I had no idea he was at the same university as me. Ryan just came out of nowhere (although we both were playing in another band at the time).
What first got you into music?
I think we all have a mixture of things, from our parents showing us their music collections at a young age to discovering cool little songs here and there on our own.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music?
I’d say we’re a mix of Muse, Foo Fighters and Paramore.
What does it mean to you to have had such a positive response to your debut EP?
It means so much! We put in so much work on that EP and we’re just glad people actually liked it!
Which of your songs are you the most proud of? Why?
Personally, I’d say ‘Oxygen’ or ‘When I Turn Cold’. We had ‘Oxygen’ for a long time and none of us really liked it and it had so much work put into it and now it has become one of our favourites. ‘When I Turn Cold’ again went through some major changes before being released but it made it that more loved by all of us.
What has been your favourite festival to perform at this summer?
They’ve all been amazing but I think we could all agree it was Download. It was our first proper experience of a major festival and we had such a good time.
You recently posted on Instagram about being back in the studio. Is there a new EP or album in the works? What can fans expect?
There’s a few things in the works yes…probably shouldn’t say too much for the time being but people can definitely expect to hear some new music before the end of the year and maybe a larger collection of music next year!
Do you have any upcoming shows?
At the moment we are just writing a lot but we do have a show with our pals Normandie in November for their album launch. It’s going to go off!
Harry’s Top Five Pick-Me-Up Songs:
1. Coldplay – Everything’s Not Lost
Song is in the title really! Whenever I feel down that song always just gives me a little boost!
2. Radiohead – Let Down
Although it’s quite a downbeat song, its just so beautiful and just makes you feel relaxed.
3. Jamiroquai – Canned Heat
Have you ever seen Napoleon Dynamite? If not watch the end dance scene and that will explain all.
4. Kendrick Lamar – I
It’s just a funky song, how can you not love it?
5. Slipknot – Psychosocial
Now hear me out, sometimes it’s just good to vent to a super heavy tune!
